Monivea Wood
Suituated 17 miles east of Galway city, the wood today is enjoyed by people for walks and recreation away from the hustle and bustle of every day life, freedom to roam and the enjoyment of outdoors and fresh air activity. It is known internationally for both its unique flora and archeology. The Monivea Wood is widely regarded as being one of the most interesting, diverse and sensitive parts of East County Galway. Apart from the partially completed felling of the Coillte crop, it remains for the moment, largely undisturbed as a quite meditative place.. The Monivea Demesne Preservation Society argued that the proposed developments could be sited elsewhere in the locality where there would not be such a drastic change to the aminity of the wood, its flora, fauna or habitat.
Our Mission
The Society is working to achieve:
- The preservation of Monivea Wood as a wood in its entirety.
- Co-operation with Coillte to facilitate the effective management of the wood along sustainable forestry management principles in consultation with the community to include:
--biodiversity - at least 15% broadleaf indigenous trees
--a balance between market production and community use
--part of the wood put in trust as an educational facility and allowed to mature and age
--protection of wildlife and the eco-system
--maintance and enhancement of existing walks through the wood.
